SCMS AYP Status
August 2010

Dear Parents,

On January 8, 2002, President Bush signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). This law represents an education reform plan that makes schools responsible for improving the academic performance of all students. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is one of the cornerstones of the NCLB Act. It is a measure of year-to-year student achievement on statewide tests. Title I schools that do not meet the State standard for AYP in the same subject for two or more consecutive years are placed in Needs Improvement (NI) status.

Screven County Middle School did not make Adequately Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2009-2010 in Math among our sub-groups. While our school is not currently in “NI” status, we have begun to develop a plan to move our school from this status to that of “meeting standard”.
Please rest assured that this status does not indicate that your child is not receiving the best possible education but rather an academic achievement bar by which all schools in the nation receiving federal funds must meet. Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

James A. Thompson IV

Principal
Screven County Middle School
